“There is nothing in this world you can’t do.”
Jim Abbott
We love indomitable underdogs at Socent Studios.
In late 2017 Mike Ramsdell pursued a once in a lifetime opportunity and approached his hometown hero and former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher Jim Abbott, who played despite having been born without a right hand, about telling his inspiring story.
To Mike's amazement, Jim agreed.
Mike and Jim then teamed with Fox Sports Films, Major League Baseball and IMG Original Content to produce the television documentary, SET APART, The Jim Abbott Story about Jim's life as a Flint, Michigan native and MLB standout. Their film will air on FOX TV, Oct. 14, at 4pm EST.
With our CEO-founder Justin Bastian being a life-long Cleveland, Ohio sports fan and Mike being a life-long Detroit, Michigan sports fan, sports discussions at Socent are never dull. Mike especially never let's Justin forget the time Jim pitched a no-hitter against his Cleveland Indians.
Sports rivalries aside, Mike, Justin, and all at Socent are infinitely inspired by the incredible legacy of overcoming seemingly impossible odds that is Jim Abbott.

25 years ago on September 4, 1993, Jim Abbott, a NY Yankee at the time, threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. What made the win all the more spectacular is that Jim Abbott was born missing a right hand. SET APART, chronicles the journey of Jim Abbott from Flint little league to the major leagues and the obstacles he had to overcome to achieve such success playing the game with one hand.
Using stock footage and interviews with Abbott, friends, teammates and family, SET APART weaves an inspiring narrative that stands as a testament to Abbott’s firm belief, “There is nothing in this world you can’t do.”
“It’s a great film, about a great guy”, said Mike. “And as a Flint native, it’s even more rewarding that Flint is the city where it all began.”
